​Marjolein (Mayo) Desmet is a Belgian flutist. She graduated at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp, where she studied for 5 years with, principal flutist of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, Aldo Baerten. Marjolein obtained a ‘Bachelor of flute performance’ in 2013 and was awarded a ‘Master of flute performance’ in 2015. In 2016, Marjolein specialized in music pedagogy and received her title ‘Master in Music Pedagogy’ with ‘High Distinction’.

Marjolein Desmet was a prize winner during her participation in the ‘Belfius Classics’ competition in 2009, in the category ‘instrument,’ and in 2010, in the category ‘chamber music’. She also has been privileged to perform in master classes with such renowned artists as: Emily Beynon (principal flutist - Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orkest), Sir James Galway and Lady Jeanne Galway, Paul Edmond Davis (Previous principal flutist - London Symphonic Orchestra), Marieke Schneemann (Previous principal flutist - Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra), Peter Verhoyen (Piccoloist - Antwerp Symphony Orchestra) Eva Amsler, Lieve Goossens (Principal flutist - Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège), Peter Lukas Graf, Jean Michell Tanguy, Abbie de Quant,...

In Belgium, Marjolein played, as principal flutist, concerts with ‘Mechels Kamerorkest’ and ‘Antwerpen Camerata’. As soloist she did several projects with the ‘Vivarte Chamber Orchestra’. During her studietime at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, Marjolein Desmet was asked to give several concerts and masterclasses in Mexico at

conservatories in different states such as the ‘Conservatorio de Musica de Celaya’, ‘Departamento de Música de la Universidad de Guanajuato’, the ‘Guanajuato Flute Studio’ and the ‘Escuela Superior de Música Uadec’ in Saltillo, Coahuila. In 2016 Marjolein Desmet moved to live in Mexico for the following six years, where she was freelancing and performing with the ‘Orquestra Filarmónica del Desierto Coahuila de Zaragoza’ (OFDC), with which she had the opportunity to play concert in ‘Palacio de Bellas Artes’ in Mexico City in 2017, one of Mexico’s most famous concert halls. In 2019 Marjolein got the opportunity to perform in concerts of great tenors such as Andrea Bocelli and Placido Domingo, and soprano Nadine Sierra.

In 2018, Marjolein Desmet started up her own flute studio "Mayo's Flute Studio", and in 2019 she became a "Little Flute Creator" of the international flute community "FlutePlay". Within this community she is also the editor of the "Little Flute Magazine".

​

Since moving back to Belgium in 2022, Marjolein has been performing in chamber music ensembles, she has been dedicating herself to teaching flute and she continues creating didactical material for young flutists.
